English 9A — The Written Word and the Rights of Nations is the first semester of a two-semester, college-preparatory Grade 9 English sequence built for Bureau of Indian Education schools.
Every text in this course is by a Native author writing under their own name, for publication, by their own choice: Samson Occom (Mohegan), William Apess (Pequot), Elias Boudinot (Cherokee), Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins (Northern Paiute), Standing Bear (Ponca) and Alexander Posey (Muscogee Creek). No traditional story, ceremony or sacred material appears anywhere in it — those belong to the nations that hold them, not to a publisher.
The course is deliberately incomplete. Each unit contains marked local knowledge slots for the material that belongs to the nation this school serves: its own treaty, its own account of an event, its own language. The course ships the architecture, the standards coverage and the nationally published texts. The school and the community supply what is theirs.
