English 9B — World Voices: Form, Empire and the Modern Self is the second semester of a two-semester, UC A-G Subject Area B (English) college-preparatory sequence for Grade 9, built to the California Common Core State Standards for ELA, Grades 9-10.
This is the parallel track to English 9B — Drama, Poetry and the Public Voice. It teaches the same standards through world literature: Kālidāsa’s Shakuntala (c. 4th-5th century, trans. Arthur W. Ryder, 1912), a poetry anthology from India, China, Japan and the Caribbean, the founding documents of the United States read against Equiano, Gandhi and Casement, and Olaudah Equiano’s Interesting Narrative (1789) complete.
One skill runs through the whole semester and is not in the first: reading in translation. A translator is an author, a translation is a made thing with a date and a purpose, and comparing two of them is one of the fastest routes into what a text is actually doing.
