The teacher companion to U.S. History B — Depression, World War, Cold War and Civil Rights (California), the second semester of the Grade 11 United States History and Geography course, built on the California History-Social Science standards 11.6-11.11, the grades 9-12 Historical and Social Sciences Analysis Skills, and the CCSS literacy standards for history/social studies, grades 11-12. It is designed for UC A-G area A.
Module 1 covers the semester as a whole: how it meets the standards and A-G and brings California’s histories and local sources into every unit; teaching Japanese American incarceration, the atomic bombings, the Holocaust, the Mexican Repatriation and racial violence with accuracy and care; teaching recent decades without partisanship; and pacing, cuts, access and the copyright rule, including how to use Martin Luther King Jr.’s and Malcolm X’s words and post-1929 books through library copies and links. Modules 2-5 take one student unit each: a briefing on what students produce and the misreadings that arrive every year, a facilitation module for the seminar and the writing workshop, and a scoring module with synthetic student work at three levels — a document-based essay, a moot-court brief and argument, a structured academic controversy and an oral-history essay — and the feedback that moves each.
