The teacher companion to U.S. History A — Founding Ideals, Industrial America and a World Power (California), the first semester of the Grade 11 United States History and Geography course, built on the California History-Social Science standards 11.1-11.5, the grades 9-12 Historical and Social Sciences Analysis Skills, and the CCSS literacy standards for history/social studies, grades 11-12. It is designed for UC A-G area A.
Module 1 covers the semester as a whole: how it meets the standards and A-G and brings California’s own histories and local sources into every unit; teaching difficult history — racial violence, exclusion, lynching, colonial war — with accuracy and care; pacing, what to cut and how to handle present-day connections without partisanship; and access, tools, academic integrity and the course’s copyright rule. Modules 2-5 take one student unit each: a briefing on what students produce and the misreadings that arrive every year, a facilitation module for the seminar and the writing workshop, and a scoring module with synthetic student work at three levels and the feedback that moves each.
