The teacher companion to Biology A — Cells, Energy and Heredity (California), the first semester of a full-year laboratory biology course for grade 10. It is built on the CA NGSS performance expectations HS-LS1-1 to HS-LS1-7, HS-LS3-1 to HS-LS3-3, HS-LS2-3 and HS-LS2-5, with the science and engineering practices, crosscutting concepts and RST.9-10 literacy standards.
Module 1 covers the semester as a whole: the UC A-G area D case and the hands-on lab share; lab safety and management under the CDE Science Safety Handbook, including microscopes and stains, 3% hydrogen peroxide, living organisms and the student’s right to a dissection alternative; teaching sensitive topics (genetics without family disclosure, evolution and human impact handled respectfully); phenomenon-driven, three-dimensional teaching; and pacing, tools and access. Modules 2-5 take one student unit each: a briefing on what students produce and the misconceptions that arrive every year, a facilitation lesson for the investigation lab, the argumentation lab and the modeling workshop (with a lab report to calibrate on), and a scoring lesson with synthetic student work at three bands, the errors it contains and the one note that moves each.
Every number in the exemplars was recomputed from the same data the student lessons use, so you can score them against the lesson you just taught.
