The teacher companion to Graphic Design and Visual Communication B — Type, Color, Brand and Portfolio (Open Curriculum Edition), the second semester of a full-year CTE course in the Arts, Media and Entertainment sector, pathway A (Design, Visual and Media Arts). The course delivers the six units of The VR School’s approved UC record FT3CN9 on open sources and free, open-source tools (Scribus, Inkscape, GIMP and Krita), and is built on the CA CTE Model Curriculum Standards for Arts, Media and Entertainment and the CCSS literacy standards for technical subjects.
Module 1 covers the semester as a whole: how the course meets the record, the CTE standards and UC area G; teaching typography, color and accessibility as evidence-based decisions; pacing and what to cut; and tools, fonts, career data, portfolios without public accounts, and work-based learning. Modules 2-5 take one student unit each: a briefing on what students produce and the misconceptions that arrive every year, a facilitation lesson for the critique or testing lab and the production workshop, and a scoring lesson with synthetic student work at three bands, commentary, and the one feedback note that moves each piece.
Every calculation in the exemplars (grid measurements, contrast ratios, prices) was recomputed and matches the student lessons. Career figures in exemplars are shown in brackets, because students must take them from the current Occupational Outlook Handbook with their year.
