The teacher companion to Graphic Design and Visual Communication A — Design Thinking and Principles (Open Curriculum Edition), the first semester of a full-year CTE course in the Arts, Media and Entertainment sector, pathway A (Design, Visual and Media Arts). The course delivers the six units of The VR School’s approved UC record MQG4H5 on open sources and free, open-source tools (GIMP, Inkscape, Krita and Scribus), and is built on the CA CTE Model Curriculum Standards for Arts, Media and Entertainment and the CCSS literacy standards for technical subjects.
Module 1 covers the semester as a whole: how the course meets the CTE standards, the approved record and UC area G; building a critique culture and teaching design as problem solving rather than taste; pacing and what to cut; and tools, access, workstation safety, copyright integrity and student privacy. Modules 2-5 take one student unit each: a briefing on what students produce and the misconceptions that arrive every year, a facilitation lesson for the critique lab and the production workshop, and a scoring lesson with synthetic student work at three bands, commentary, and the one feedback note that moves each piece.
Every number in the exemplars (pixel dimensions, test percentages, proportions) was recomputed and matches the student lessons, so you can score them against the lesson you just taught.
