Spanish 1A — Greetings, School, Family and Likes (California)

Spanish 1A — Greetings, School, Family and Likes is the first semester of a full-year Spanish 1 course (UC A-G area E, level 1) built on the 2019 World Languages Standards for California Public Schools. It targets ACTFL Novice Mid, moving toward Novice High by the end of Spanish 1B.

Four units: ¡Hola! Me presento (greetings, the alphabet, numbers and dates, ser), En la escuela (school, articles and agreement, telling time, -ar verbs), Mi familia y mis amigos (family, tener, possessives, ser with adjective agreement) and ¿Qué te gusta hacer? (gustar, -er and -ir verbs, agreeing and disagreeing). Every lesson has spoken and written Spanish with browser-read audio, and every unit ends in an Integrated Performance Assessment in all three modes of communication.

Culture: the course centers California’s Spanish-speaking communities, from Los Ángeles, San José and San Diego to the Indigenous Oaxacan families (Mixtec, Zapotec, Triqui and others) of Oxnard and the Central Valley, alongside Mexico, Central America and the wider Spanish-speaking world. The teaching baseline is Mexican and Central American Spanish as spoken in California, and other varieties are shown and accepted.
