Spanish 1B — Food, Community, Free Time and Plans is the second semester of a full-year Spanish 1 course (UC A-G area E, level 1) built on the 2019 World Languages Standards for California Public Schools. It targets ACTFL Novice High by the end of the year.
Four units: ¡A comer! (food, meals, restaurants, stem-changing verbs), Mi comunidad (places, ir, estar and directions, California place names and the missions), El tiempo libre y el clima (weather, sports, jugar and irregular yo verbs) and Mis planes (ir a + infinitive, invitations and community celebrations). Every lesson has spoken and written Spanish with browser-read audio, and every unit ends in an Integrated Performance Assessment in all three modes of communication.
Culture: California’s Spanish-speaking communities are at the center: the Mesoamerican foods that began in the milpa, El Pueblo de Los Ángeles, the missions told with the perspectives of California’s Native nations, and community celebrations across the state. The teaching baseline is Mexican and Central American Spanish as spoken in California, and other varieties are shown and accepted.
Review notice: all Spanish in this course is original, machine-authored text. A native or heritage speaker of Spanish must review the course before students use it. Its status is pending native-speaker review.
