rehearse smooth transitions between barre chords in a short progression, using a structured practice protocol and peer feedback.
Prototype & Peer Feedback
Do Now. Switch between an E-shape barre at fret 1 and fret 3 five times, slowly. What part of the switch is hardest: the sound, or the movement?
When switching between two barre chords, what is hardest: getting a clean sound, or moving your hand quickly enough?
Why rehearsal works. A chord progression is not one skill, it is two: playing each chord cleanly, and moving between them without a gap. Most of the actual difficulty in a barre-chord progression lives in the second skill, not the first — which is why isolating the transition itself, not just practicing each chord alone, is the fastest way to improve.
The slow-then-fast method. Pick two adjacent chords in your progression. Play the first, then switch to the second as slowly as you need to land it cleanly — even if that means counting several full seconds between them. Only once that switch is clean and repeatable do you speed it up. Trying to play a progression at full speed before any single transition is reliable just repeats the same mistake over and over.
A three-step feedback protocol. When you play for a partner, they check three specific things, in this order: (1) Does each chord pass the buzz test — any dead or buzzing strings? (2) Is the timing between chords even, or does one switch take noticeably longer than the others? (3) Does your fretting hand look tense — shoulders raised, wrist bent sharply — in a way that will tire quickly? A specific answer to each question is far more useful than “that sounded good.”
This unit’s progression uses only barre chords, built from the E-shape and A-shape you already know, at different frets — so every chord you need for the Showcase is a shape you have already practiced.
Check your understanding of the rehearsal method before you practice with a partner.
On your own: using the slow-then-fast method, rehearse your full progression at least five times, logging your tempo each time (e.g., “very slow,” “medium,” “performance speed”).
