Advanced Studio Art Honors A is the first semester of a full-year, honors studio course (UC A-G area F, Visual Arts) for grades 10-12, built on the California Arts Standards for Visual Arts at the Accomplished (HSII) and Advanced (HSIII) levels.
Four units: Seeing Like an Artist (observation, the elements and principles, and the art-criticism model), From Nature to Abstraction (cropping, faceting and limited palettes after Cézanne and the Cubists), Word and Image (collage and mixed media that interpret a student’s own poem), and Objects Transformed (found-object sculpture, an altered hat or shoe in the style of a researched artist, and the midyear exhibition). A sketchbook runs through every unit.
Sources: artworks are studied through the open-access (CC0) collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Cleveland Museum of Art and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, linked to their object pages; public-domain texts by John Ruskin, Arthur Wesley Dow and Denman Ross; and SLS-original studio handouts. The course requires no purchased software: GIMP and Krita are free.
