Advanced Studio Art Honors B — Illusion, Landscape, Message and the Sustained Investigation (California)
Advanced Studio Art Honors B is the second semester of a full-year, honors studio course (UC A-G area F, Visual Arts) for grades 10-12, built on the California Arts Standards for Visual Arts at the Accomplished (HSII) and Advanced (HSIII) levels.
Four units: Illusion (trompe l’oeil colored-pencil painting from original photographs, from Renaissance-era illusion to Photorealism), Painting with Paper (landscape across cultures, a paper color wheel and a paper-palette landscape), Art With a Message (political, narrative and symbolic art, cultural symbols of peace, a school poster campaign and a social-issue work) and The Working Artist (the art world and its careers, documenting and presenting work, the artist statement, the sustained-investigation portfolio and the year-end exhibition).
Sources: artworks are studied through the open-access (CC0) collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Cleveland Museum of Art and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, linked to their object pages; public-domain texts by Arthur Wesley Dow and Denman Ross; and SLS-original studio handouts. The course requires no purchased software: GIMP, Krita and Inkscape are free.
