The teacher companion to Physical Science B — Forces, Energy and Waves (California), the second semester of a full-year, conceptual laboratory course built on the California NGSS for motion and stability, energy, and waves (HS-PS2, HS-PS3 and HS-PS4) and engineering design (HS-ETS1).
Module 1 covers the semester as a whole: how the course completes the UC area D case and how it relates to the separate Physics course; lab safety and management for carts and washers, batteries and magnets, hot tap water, solar ovens, stretched springs and the egg-cushion challenge; the physics misconceptions ninth graders bring and how to keep the mathematics at Algebra 1 level; and phenomenon-driven teaching, pacing, PhET and spreadsheet access. Modules 2-5 take one student unit each: a briefing, a facilitation module for the investigation lab and the argumentation lab, and a scoring module with synthetic lab reports and design work at three bands, including realistic errors, and the feedback that moves each.
