The teacher companion to Physical Science A — Matter and Its Interactions (California), the first semester of a full-year, conceptual laboratory course in chemistry and physics built on the California NGSS (HS-PS1, HS-PS2-6 and HS-ETS1).
Module 1 covers the semester as a whole: how the course makes the UC area D case and how it differs from the separate Physics course; lab safety and management for vinegar, baking soda, antacid tablets, magnesium ribbon and hot tap water; the chemistry misconceptions ninth graders bring and how to keep the mathematics at Algebra 1 level without losing rigor; and phenomenon-driven teaching, pacing and PhET access. Modules 2-5 take one student unit each: a briefing on what students produce and the misconceptions that arrive every year, a facilitation module for the investigation lab and the argumentation lab, and a scoring module with synthetic student work at three bands, including realistic errors, and the feedback that moves each.
