The teacher companion to Biology B — Ecosystems, Evolution and Human Impact (California), the second semester of a full-year laboratory biology course for grade 10. It is built on the CA NGSS performance expectations HS-LS2-1, 2-2, 2-4, 2-6, 2-7 and 2-8, HS-LS4-1 to HS-LS4-6 and HS-ETS1-1 to HS-ETS1-4, with the science and engineering practices, crosscutting concepts and RST.9-10 literacy standards.
Module 1 covers the semester as a whole: the UC A-G area D case and the hands-on lab share; lab safety and management under the CDE Science Safety Handbook, with particular attention to living organisms (duckweed, brine shrimp, pill bugs), their humane care and disposal, fieldwork, and the student’s right to a dissection alternative; teaching evolution as settled science with respect, genetics without family disclosure, and human impact without doom; phenomenon-driven, three-dimensional teaching and the engineering design cycle; and pacing, tools and access, including PhET and NetLogo Web. Modules 2-5 take one student unit each: a briefing on what students produce and the misconceptions that arrive every year, a facilitation lesson for the investigation lab, the argumentation lab and the modeling workshop (with a lab report to calibrate on), and a scoring lesson with synthetic student work at three bands, the errors it contains and the one note that moves each.
Every number in the exemplars was recomputed from the same data the student lessons use, so you can score them against the lesson you just taught.
