Filmmaking and Digital Media A — Story, Planning and Production (Open Curriculum Edition) is the first semester of a full-year CTE course in Arts, Media and Entertainment (pathway C, Production and Managerial Arts). It covers the six units of The VR School’s approved UC semester record AM5SLD on open sources and free, open-source tools.
Four units: Film Language and Genre, Screenwriting and Story Development, Producing: Money, Time, Places and People, and Camera, Light and Sound. Students watch and analyze public-domain films made before 1931, write and table-read their own short screenplay, build a balanced budget, schedule and call sheet, scout a location and plan crew and casting with proper releases, and then storyboard, light and record sound for a scene from their own script.
Tools: phones or school cameras, Shotcut or Kdenlive for editing, Audacity for sound, and any plain-text editor for screenplays written in Fountain format. No purchased software is required. Where the school licenses Adobe applications, students may also work toward the optional Adobe Certified Professional in Video Design credential; this course alone does not claim to prepare them for it.
This is the Open Curriculum Edition. A separate Textbook Edition of the course exists; this edition is built entirely on public-domain films and openly licensed sources.
