Video Game Design Foundations B — Open Curriculum Edition is the second semester of a full-year CTE course in Arts, Media and Entertainment (pathway D, Game Design and Integration) for grades 9-12, submitted as UC A-G area G. It is built on the California CTE Model Curriculum Standards for Arts, Media and Entertainment and the CCSS literacy standards for technical subjects.
Four units: Digital Prototypes and Ethical Playtesting, Level Design, Accessibility and Player Experience, Balance, Monetization and Getting Games to Players, and Careers and the Capstone Playable Prototype. Students build and playtest a Godot prototype, design and audit levels for accessibility, balance systems with data, weigh the ethics of loot boxes, plan a launch with a web export, prepare for careers and SkillsUSA, and finish with a playable prototype defended at a showcase.
Open Curriculum Edition. The approved course records (H5HZ6M and J5QTDP) list a commercial textbook. This edition delivers the same units on open sources: original SLS course text, the Godot Engine documentation (CC BY 3.0), Kenney game assets (CC0) and public-domain U.S. government sources (FTC, BLS). All software is free; no student account is required anywhere, and publishing is done through a teacher-managed page.
