The teacher companion to Video Game Design Foundations A — Open Curriculum Edition, the first semester of a full-year CTE course in Arts, Media and Entertainment, pathway D (Game Design and Integration), approved by UC as area G under The VR School’s records H5HZ6M and J5QTDP. This edition delivers the approved units on open sources and the free Godot 4 engine instead of the commercial textbook the records list.
Module 1 covers the semester as a whole: how the course meets the CTE standards, the approved records and A-G; teaching programming to students with very different starting points through game builds; pacing and what to cut; and access, tools, safety and integrity. Modules 2-5 take one student unit each: a briefing on what students produce and the misconceptions that arrive every year, a facilitation module for the critique lab and the production workshop, and a scoring module with synthetic student work at three levels and the feedback that moves each.
You do not need to be a professional game developer to teach this course. You do need to have done every build yourself before students do; the guide tells you where students get stuck.
