AI-Inspired Tactile Art A — Machines, Materials and Touch is the first semester of a full-year UC A-G area F (Visual Arts) course for grades 9-12, rebuilt on open sources from The VR School’s approved course record L8FYP6. It is aligned to the California Arts Standards for Visual Arts (2019), Proficient and Accomplished levels.
Four units: How Machines Make Images, How Hands Answer, Texture: The Language of Touch, Tactile Mediums: Surface, Paint and Mixed Media, and Art for Touch: Tactile Graphics and Access. Students learn how generative image models work, translate AI-generated images into clay, textured relief and mixed media, and close the semester by designing tactile graphics and a touchable exhibit for blind and low-vision audiences.
Sources and tools: artworks studied through the CC0 open-access programs of the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and The Metropolitan Museum of Art; U.S. Copyright Office guidance on AI (public domain); lessons written for this course. The approved record lists DALL-E 3, a 2024 newspaper article and a 2023 museum video; these are account-based or copyrighted, so the course replaces them with the course AI image set (three AI-generated works reproduced in public-domain U.S. Copyright Office decisions and fully described in Lesson 1.1), public-domain AI images on Wikimedia Commons, or open tools that run without accounts, including the open p5.js editor and Teachable Machine (both usable without accounts), and its own texts. Students never need an account on an AI service.
