English 9B — Story, Land and the Native Novel is the second semester of a two-semester, college-preparatory Grade 9 English sequence built for Bureau of Indian Education schools.
Every text is by a Native author writing under their own name, for publication, by their own choice: Mourning Dove / Christine Quintasket (Colville), Charles Eastman / Ohiyesa (Santee Dakota), E. Pauline Johnson / Tekahionwake (Mohawk), Alexander Posey (Muscogee Creek) and Zitkala-Ša (Yankton Dakota). No traditional story, ceremony or sacred material appears anywhere in this course. Those belong to the nations that hold them, and decisions about them are not a publisher’s to make.
As in the first semester, the course is deliberately incomplete: each unit carries marked local knowledge slots for what belongs to the nation this school serves — its own language, its own agreements, its own account. The course ships the architecture and the published texts; the community supplies what is theirs.
