explain how Spanish 2B completes the Intermediate standards across the year and brings students to the Intermediate Low exit target for UC A-G area E.
Spanish 2B is the second half of the year-long level-2 course. Together with 2A it cites every Intermediate code in the California World Languages Standards (2019), and the build checks coverage across both semesters. In 2B every unit again cites the three modes and at least one Cultures code, and every non-culminating lesson has at least two language interactions.
The exit target is Intermediate Low in every mode. By June a student should understand the main idea and several details of connected texts on familiar topics; create with the language to ask, answer and react in conversations and simple transactions; and present in strings of connected sentences across time frames, understood without effort by a sympathetic listener. The 2B IPA rubrics are written at that level from Unit 1 onward, one step above most of 2A.
The grammar in 2B is chosen for the functions it enables. The imperfect and its contrast with the preterite let students narrate with background, which is the defining skill between Novice and Intermediate narration. Object pronouns let students avoid repetition and handle transactions (a clinic, a pharmacy). Commands and comparisons let students persuade and weigh options. The present subjunctive, introduced only with common expressions of wish and emotion, lets students react to other people’s plans. None of these is expected to be fully controlled by June; the target is partial control with frequent correct use in meaningful contexts.
The themes are childhood and memory, health and well-being, the environment, and community and careers. Culture continues to center California: Spanish-language cinemas in Los Angeles, promotoras de salud, drought and the right to water in the Central Valley, monarch butterflies on the coast, interpreters of Indigenous languages, and the State Seal of Biliteracy. Mexico and Central America appear through legends, Xochimilco and the monarch reserves.
For A-G reviewers, the evidence is the same as in 2A: four IPAs with unseen interpretive texts, spontaneous interpersonal tasks, and multi-draft presentational work. Keep a portfolio for each student with 2A’s IPA 1 and 2B’s IPA 4 side by side.
