The teacher companion to Spanish 1A — Greetings, School, Family and Likes (California), the first semester of a full-year Spanish 1 course built on the 2019 World Languages Standards for California Public Schools and designed for UC A-G area E, level 1. It targets ACTFL Novice Mid, moving toward Novice High by the end of Spanish 1B.
Before anything else: every Spanish string in the student course and in this guide is machine-authored. A native or heritage speaker of Spanish must review the course before students use it. Its status is pending native-speaker review; Module 1, Lesson 1.1 explains what the review covers.
Module 1 covers the semester as a whole: how it meets the standards and area E, teaching for proficiency in the three modes with a high share of Spanish, pacing and what to cut, and access, heritage speakers, tools and integrity. Modules 2-5 take one student unit each: a briefing on what students produce and the errors that arrive every year, a facilitation lesson for the interpersonal lab and the presentational workshop, and a scoring lesson for the unit’s Integrated Performance Assessment with synthetic student work at three levels.
