Teaching Filmmaking and Digital Media A (Open Curriculum Edition) — Delivery Guide & Professional Development
The teacher companion to Filmmaking and Digital Media A — Story, Planning and Production (Open Curriculum Edition), the first semester of a full-year UC A-G area G and CTE Arts, Media and Entertainment course (pathway C, Production and Managerial Arts). The course rebuilds The VR School’s approved UC record AM5SLD on public-domain films made before 1931 and free, open-source tools: phones, Shotcut or Kdenlive, and Audacity.
Module 1 covers the semester as a whole: how the course meets the CTE standards, UC A-G and the approved record; teaching with century-old films and building a safety culture on set; pacing and what to cut; and access, equipment, privacy and integrity. Modules 2-5 take one student unit each: a briefing on what students produce and the misconceptions that arrive every year, a facilitation lesson for the critique lab and the production workshop, and a scoring lesson with synthetic student work at three levels and the feedback that moves each.
You do not need to have worked in the film industry to teach this course. You do need to have done each production lab yourself before students do it.
