The teacher companion to English 9BV — World Voices: Form, Empire and the Modern Self. That course is the second semester of the parallel track: the same CA CCSS 9-10 standards and UC A-G Area B bar as English 9B, taught through Kālidāsa’s Shakuntala, Tagore, Naidu, Pound and Waley’s Chinese translations, McKay, the Declaration read against Equiano, Gandhi and Casement, and Equiano’s Interesting Narrative. This guide is a separate course, not a hidden section of the student course, so you can work through it before you have a roster.
Module 1 covers what is specific to this semester. First, reading in translation, the skill that runs through every unit, and how to teach it without being a specialist in Sanskrit or Chinese. Then what an A-G reviewer and a standards audit will ask about a world-literature semester, a sixteen-week calendar built on a play and a long eighteenth-century memoir, and the difficult material: the Middle Passage, atrocity reported in the Congo, and the open scholarly question about Equiano’s birthplace.
Modules 2-5 take one student unit each. Each has a briefing, a facilitation module and a scoring module. The scoring module includes synthetic student responses at each band and the one piece of feedback that moves each student up.
