explain how Semester B completes the approved record’s units and moves students from Proficient to Accomplished and Advanced Media Arts work.
Where the record is completed. Semester A delivered record Unit 1 (multimedia presentations introducing AI and machine learning in healthcare) and record Unit 2 (visual representations of body systems and medical devices), and began record Unit 3 with the history of AI. Semester B completes the rest. Unit 1 (AI in the Clinic) and Unit 2 (Building Small Models) deliver record Unit 3: critique of current AI applications, robotic surgery, prosthetics and AR, radiology, predictive analytics, personalised medicine, telemedicine, bias and data quality, case studies of success and failure presented as TED-style talks or podcasts, redesigns of failed systems, and the hands-on options the record names (a model for heart-rate anomalies, a simple chatbot, a scientific-method test presented on a tri-fold). Unit 3 (Engineering Design and the Patent Drawing) delivers record Unit 4. Unit 4 (Capstone) delivers record Unit 5, with the patent portfolio carrying record Unit 4 forward.
Raising the level. Semester A worked mostly at the Proficient (HSI) level. Semester B’s lessons cite Accomplished (HSII) and Advanced (HSIII) codes, and the rubrics expect more: a personal aesthetic applied deliberately, defensible and then rigorous self-evaluation, transdisciplinary synthesis and presentations curated for intentional impact. In practice this means asking more “why” questions at every stage. A proficient student makes good choices; an advanced student can explain the alternatives they rejected and what evidence decided it.
What changes for you. Students now make things that do something: a tested classifier, a coded anomaly flag, a prototype with an AI component, a capstone. The teacher’s role shifts from demonstrating to coaching and questioning. You will spend more time in one-to-one conferences, and the facilitation lessons in this guide give you conference questions for each unit.
The capstone arc. Start talking about the capstone in week 1. Students who keep an idea file through Units 1-3 (problems they noticed in case studies, prototype ideas, patents they found interesting) choose better capstone topics in Unit 4 than those who start from nothing. Build a two-minute idea-file check into the end of each unit.
Grade levels and prerequisites. The course is for grade 12, as in the approved record. Semester A is the prerequisite for Semester B.
Where the record’s units are completed in Semester B
| Unit | Record unit(s) | Record assignments delivered | Culminating work |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 AI in the Clinic | Unit 3 | Case critiques; TED-style talk or podcast; redesign of a failed system | Case talk with redesign |
| 2 Building Small Models | Unit 3 | Anomaly model; simple chatbot option; scientific-method test on a tri-fold | Tested prototype exhibit |
| 3 Engineering Design and the Patent Drawing | Unit 4 | Design process for a biomedical technology; annotated patents; sample patent | Design portfolio and hypothetical patent |
| 4 Capstone | Units 5 and 4 | Concept to prototype; budget, funding, ethics; exhibition; resume, portfolio, mock interview | Capstone exhibition |
