What this course is. Artificial Intelligence Design and Development is an interdisciplinary arts course (UC A-G area F). The approved record, P9M8JW, describes a course in which students explore AI in healthcare through the visual and performing arts: they learn about body systems, medical challenges and AI solutions, and they make visual presentations, interactive displays, brochures, 3D models, prototypes and AI-generated imagery. Our rebuild keeps that promise but replaces the commercial textbook the record lists with OpenStax Anatomy and Physiology 2e (CC BY 4.0) and public-domain federal sources (FDA, NIH, HHS, the Copyright Office). Tell students and families this plainly; it is also the answer if anyone asks why there is no textbook to buy.
It is an arts course first. This is the most important framing decision you will make. Students are assessed on the California Arts Standards for Media Arts, not on biology or computer science standards. The science and the AI must be accurate, and the rubrics hold them to that, but the products are media artworks and the core verbs are the arts verbs: create, produce, present, respond and connect. When a student asks “is this a science class?”, the answer is that it is an arts class whose subject is science and technology, the way a documentary film course might be about history.
How the semester covers the record. Unit 1 (How Machines Learn) and Unit 2 (Human-Centered AI) deliver record Unit 1, and Unit 2 begins record Unit 3’s past-to-present history of AI inventions. Units 3 and 4 (Drawing the Body; Signals and Diagnosis) deliver record Unit 2, including the body-system models, the doctor-patient role-play, the diagnostic tools and the medical data and HIPAA discussion. Semester B completes record Units 3, 4 and 5.
Standards. Every Media Arts anchor (Cr1-Cr3, Pr4-Pr6, Re7-Re9, Cn10-Cn11) is cited in Semester A, mostly at the Proficient (HSI) level with some Accomplished (HSII) work; Semester B moves to HSII and HSIII. Each unit has a Creating and a Responding code, and CCSS literacy standards (RST.11-12, WHST.11-12, SL.11-12) carry the reading, writing and speaking load. The course is for grade 12, as in the approved record; check the Biology prerequisite.
