This course is a rebuild of The VR School’s approved UC course record L8FYP6, AI-Inspired Tactile Art, on open sources. The record promises five units: an introduction to AI-generated imagery and tactile interpretation; tactile mediums and techniques; composition and design; conceptual depth and emotional impact; and critique and reflection. Semester A covers the first two in depth and begins the fifth; Semester B covers the third and fourth and completes the fifth. Every student unit names the record units it covers, so you can show a reviewer exactly where each promise is kept.

The record’s representative assignments are here, intact. Record Unit 1 asks students to select an AI-generated image and create a tactile representation of it in clay; that is Portfolio Task 1 (Lesson 1.5). Record Unit 2 asks students to choose a tactile medium and create a work inspired by an AI-generated image; that is Portfolio Task 3 (Lesson 3.5). The texture panel (2.5) and the touchable exhibit (4.5) extend them.

Standards. The course is aligned to the California Arts Standards for Visual Arts (2019), which use four artistic processes — Creating, Presenting, Responding and Connecting — and eleven anchor standards. Semester A works at the Proficient (HSI) and Accomplished (HSII) levels. Every unit cites at least one Creating and one Responding standard; across the year every anchor standard is cited. The table below shows where each process is assessed.

Why it is college-preparatory. UC area F courses must involve sustained studio work, the study of art in its cultural and historical contexts, and critical response. This course adds a demanding translation problem: students must turn a flat digital image into a surface read by touch, test it with real readers, and defend their choices. Each portfolio task moves through a plan, a critiqued work in progress, a revised final and a defense. Students write formal analyses of works from at least eight cultures and periods using museum records.

What replaced the record’s materials. The record listed DALL-E 3, a 2024 newspaper article and a 2023 museum video. Account-based tools and copyrighted media cannot be built into an open course, so they are replaced by a teacher-provided AI image set, teacher-run demonstrations, the p5.js editor and Teachable Machine (used without accounts), and our own texts. You may still show the museum video in class if your school’s license allows streaming it.
