Video Game Design Foundations A — Open Curriculum Edition is the first semester of a full-year CTE course in Arts, Media and Entertainment (pathway D, Game Design and Integration) for grades 9-12, submitted as UC A-G area G. It is built on the California CTE Model Curriculum Standards for Arts, Media and Entertainment and the CCSS literacy standards for technical subjects.
Four units: Play, Players and the Designer’s Craft, The Design Process: Concepts, Documents and Paper Prototypes, Engines and Tools: Building in Godot 4, and Worlds, Story, Art Style and Sound. Students analyze games with formal frameworks, research careers, build and playtest a paper game, write GDScript in the free Godot 4 engine for movement, scoring, physics and animation, and close the semester with a narrative and art-direction concept and a portfolio.
Open Curriculum Edition. The approved course records (H5HZ6M and J5QTDP) list a commercial textbook. This edition delivers the same units on open sources instead: original SLS course text, the Godot Engine documentation (CC BY 3.0), Kenney game assets (CC0) and public-domain U.S. government sources. All software is free; no student account is required anywhere.
