Teaching English 9A-BIE — The Written Word and the Rights of Nations: Delivery Guide & Professional Development

This is the teacher companion to English 9A-BIE — The Written Word and the Rights of Nations, the first semester of a Grade 9 English sequence built for Bureau of Indian Education schools. It teaches the full CCSS 9-10 spine through Native authors writing under their own names: Samson Occom, William Apess, Sequoyah and the Cherokee Nation’s own documents, Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins, Standing Bear and Alexander Posey.

Module 1 is about working with the community. It covers what “review draft” means and who reviews it, and the standards basis for a BIE school: the host state’s standards, or standards the tribe defines itself. It covers the calendar with the lead time each local knowledge slot needs, and how to fill those slots: who holds the knowledge, how to ask, and what a school must not do. Modules 2-5 take one student unit each, with a briefing, facilitation and scoring.

Everything in the course that belongs to a nation is marked as a gap and handed to the people who hold it. This guide tells you how to work with those people. It does not supply what belongs to them.
