The teacher companion to Advanced Studio Art Honors A — Observation, Abstraction and Transformation (California), the first semester of a full-year honors studio course for grades 10-12 built on the California Arts Standards for Visual Arts at the Accomplished and Advanced levels and modeled on The VR School’s approved UC record WE2HBX (area F, Visual Arts).
Module 1 covers the semester as a whole: how the course meets the standards, A-G and the honors expectations of the record; running critique so that it improves work; studio safety, materials and pacing; and access, museum sources and integrity. Modules 2-5 take one student unit each: a briefing on what students produce and where the recurring problems are, a facilitation lesson for the critique lab and the production workshop, and a scoring lesson with synthetic student work at three levels and the feedback that moves each.
