Physical Science A — Matter and Its Interactions is the first semester of a full-year laboratory science course for grades 9-10 (UC A-G area D). It is built on the California NGSS high-school performance expectations for matter and its interactions (HS-PS1-1 to HS-PS1-8) and engineering design, with the CCSS literacy standards for science and technical subjects.
Four units: Atoms and the Periodic Table, Bonding and the Properties of Substances, Chemical Reactions, Conservation of Mass and the Mole, and Reaction Rates, Equilibrium and the Nucleus. Each unit opens with a California phenomenon, includes a hands-on lab with inexpensive, school-safe materials (no open flames and no hazardous chemicals), and ends in a multi-draft performance task.
