The teacher companion to Ethnic Studies — Identity, History and Community Action (California), the one-semester grades 9-12 course built on the California Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum’s guiding values and outcomes (cited as ES.GV1-6 and ES.OUT1-8), the grades 9-12 Historical and Social Sciences Analysis Skills, and the CCSS literacy standards for history/social studies. It is designed for UC A-G area G.
Module 1 covers the course as a whole: how it meets the Model Curriculum and A-G; teaching contested questions within the guardrails AB 101 (2021) wrote into the Education Code; filling the local knowledge sections with community partners without inventing anyone’s story; and pacing, access, student privacy and wellbeing. Modules 2-5 take one student unit each: a briefing on what students produce and the misreadings that arrive every year, a facilitation lesson for the dialogue lab and the writing workshop, and a scoring lesson with synthetic student work at three bands and the feedback that moves each.
