Statistics A — Exploring Data, Study Design and Probability is the first semester of a full-year statistics course for grades 11-12, with Algebra 2 as the prerequisite. It is built on the California CCSS Statistics and Probability standards (S-ID, S-IC, S-CP, S-MD, including the (+) standards) and California’s Probability and Statistics standards (PS.1-PS.19).
Four units: Exploring One-Variable Data, Two-Variable Data and Regression, Designing Studies: Samples and Experiments, and Probability, Random Variables and the Binomial Model. Students work with real California data from NOAA, the CDC, the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Census Bureau, in CODAP and spreadsheets, and close each unit with a written and presented statistical investigation.

Optional certification links: the spreadsheet work lines up with part of the Microsoft Office Specialist Excel Associate exam objectives (formulas and functions, charts), and the optional Python route supports part of the Python Institute PCEP exam. These links are optional. The course does not prepare students for either exam on its own.
