Health — Evidence, Choices and Community is a one-semester, grade 9 health course aligned to the California Health Education Content Standards and built to meet California’s requirements for high-school health instruction.
Four units, twenty lessons: Mind, Mood and Getting Help (stress, mental health, suicide prevention and 988, valid health information and health care access), Fuel and Movement (the Dietary Guidelines, food labels, supplements and fitness claims, eating disorders, physical activity), Substances, Emergencies and Safety (the adolescent brain, vaping, alcohol, fentanyl and counterfeit pills, naloxone, hands-only CPR and AEDs, impaired driving, emergency preparedness) and Growth, Relationships and Sexual Health (the California Healthy Youth Act unit: development, healthy relationships, affirmative consent, harassment and trafficking awareness, and all FDA-approved methods of preventing pregnancy, HIV and other STIs).
Parents and guardians may excuse a student from comprehensive sexual health and HIV prevention instruction in Unit 4 by written request (Education Code 51938). Excused students complete an equal-credit alternative assignment and face no penalty.
Hands-only CPR: students learn and practice it; a CPR/First Aid/AED certification card can only be issued by a certified instructor (for example, American Red Cross or American Heart Association), which the school arranges separately.
