The teacher companion to American Government — Principles of American Democracy (California), the one-semester grade 12 government course built on the California History-Social Science Content Standards for Principles of American Democracy and Economics (12.1-12.10), the grades 9-12 Historical and Social Sciences Analysis Skills, and the CCSS literacy standards for history/social studies. It is designed for UC A-G area A.
Module 1 covers the course as a whole: how it meets the standards and A-G, teaching contested political questions without partisanship, civic participation opportunities that are specific to California, and reading primary legal and governmental sources with students. Modules 2-5 take one student unit each: a briefing on what students produce and where the misconceptions are, a facilitation module for the deliberation lab and the unit’s most demanding lesson, and a scoring module with synthetic student work at different bands and the feedback that moves each.
