The teacher companion to English 9B — Drama, Poetry and the Public Voice, and the second half of the Grade 9 delivery guide. It assumes you have either taught English 9A or worked through its guide; where a practice carries over unchanged, this course says so rather than repeating it.
Module 1 covers what actually changes in semester two: students are reading verse for the first time in the sequence and the conventions for quoting and teaching it are different; the Douglass unit describes enslavement and needs deciding about before a student asks; the pacing has a capstone runway rather than four symmetrical units; and the semester ends with a portfolio defense that assesses growth across both semesters, which is a kind of judgment most ninth-grade English never asks for.
Modules 2-5 take one student unit each — Macbeth, the poetry anthology, the seminal documents and the Douglass Narrative, and the multimodal capstone — with the same three-part shape as the 9A guide: brief it, facilitate it, score it, with real student responses at each band.
Module 1.4 is the one to read even if you are only covering a section: the portfolio defense is scored on whether a student can account for their own decisions, and that is easy to mark badly.
