English 9B is the second semester of a two-semester, UC A-G Subject Area B (English) college-preparatory sequence for Grade 9, built to the California Common Core State Standards for ELA, Grades 9-10.
Across four units you will read two full-length public-domain works — Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Frederick Douglass’s Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass — along with a poetry anthology and the founding documents of the United States, and you will write four multi-draft pieces totaling more than 2,500 words in analytical, argumentative and narrative modes. Every unit ends with a spoken component, and the semester closes with a multimodal portfolio defense.
