English 9A is the first semester of a two-semester, UC A-G Subject Area B (English) college-preparatory sequence for Grade 9, built to the California Common Core State Standards for ELA, Grades 9-10.
Across four units you will read two full-length public-domain works — Homer’s Odyssey and Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde — alongside seminal speeches and essays, and you will write four multi-draft academic essays totaling more than 2,500 words. Every unit ends with a spoken defense of your own interpretation.
